“My brothers and sisters, show no partiality as you hold the faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory... Has not God chosen those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom, which he has promised to those who love him?” (James 2:1, 5)

We can definitely get caught up with the currencies of this world: money, fame, influence, power, popularity, beauty, class. But God does not operate in worldly standards. His entire system of last / first, poor / rich, broken / healthy, slave / free is entirely countercultural. If we looked past the markers we use to assign success and status to ourselves and others, what would we find? Billions of people, uniquely and wonderfully made in the image of Christ.
I know it’s hard, friends; we’re taught to view everything, including the worth of people, through a certain lens. Be aware that the lens is there. Look past it. Use God’s standard. Be in the world, not of it.

This week I came across this description of déjà vu: the experience of life in repetition.

It made a lot of sense to me in the moment. Headlines over the weekend. Geopolitical tensions. The ebb and flow of good and bad times in your own life. Or maybe just the monotony of your day to day. Life in repetition. On repeat.

Maybe, in light of recent events or in the midst of your own déjà vu moments, you feel a bit like I did when I ran across this sentence from philosopher and theologian Soren Kierkegaard: “The self is a relation that relates itself to itself or is the relation’s relating itself to itself in the relation.” You know, that feeling that life’s full of the same words over and over again, and you can't make sense of any of them.

But I’m reminded today that the hope of the Christian faith is that God has inserted a new word into that mess. A word that bears repeating. A word of good news. Grace.

It’s a word that reminds me that this sort of déjà vu of despair, the feeling that nothing ever seems to change, is not the only word. It’s not the only kind of repetition. There is another word, a word announcing that something—or someone—has broken through this life-in-repetition and offered something truly new. Jesus described it as living water - and it continues to bubble up to the surface in unexpected ways. Grace. A word of good news that we hang on to - and extend to others - in the midst of life’s sometimes despairing repetitions.
